What is tantalum carbide?
Tantalum carbide is a light brown metallic cubic crystal, which belongs to the sodium chloride type cubic crystal system. The appearance of tantalum carbide is black to grey powder, with no smell. Tantalum carbide has a relative density of 13.9, melting point of 3880℃, boiling point of 4780℃, lattice constant a=0.4454 nm, Mohs hardness of 9-10, the thermal expansion coefficient of 6.29×10-6/K. Insoluble in water, insoluble in inorganic acid, soluble in a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid and can be decomposed. Strong resistance to oxidation, easily melted and decomposed by potassium metabisulfite. Large electrical conductivity, the resistance of 30Ω at room temperature, showing superconducting properties.

Characteristics of tantalum carbide
Tantalum carbide is highly resistant to oxidation and is susceptible to melting and decomposition by potassium metabisulfite. It has a high electrical conductivity, a resistance of 30Ω at room temperature, and shows superconducting properties. It is used in powder metallurgy, cutting tools, fine ceramics, chemical vapour deposition, hard wear-resistant alloy tools, tools, moulds and additives for wear and corrosion-resistant structural components to improve the toughness of the alloy. The sintered body of tantalum carbide shows a golden colour and can be used as a watch decoration.
The production method of tantalum carbide
Tantalum pentoxide and carbon black are used as raw materials. Tantalum pentoxide and carbon black are thoroughly mixed in a reduction furnace and heated under hydrogen or vacuum at 1500°C to reduce the powder, which produces tantalum carbide. Alternatively, tantalum carbide can be produced by initial reduction in an inert gas at 1900°C, followed by secondary carbonization under vacuum. Tantalum pentoxide can also be reduced with aluminium in a graphite crucible, and when the temperature is heated to 2000°C, pure graphite blocks are added to generate aluminium carbide in excess and then removed by cooling, and then the reaction products are crushed and impurities are removed with an inorganic acid to obtain high purity tantalum carbide crystals. Tantalum carbide with coarser particles can also be produced by direct carbonization of tantalum metal and carbon black.

Tantalum carbide is used in a wide range of applications such as tool steel, wear-resistant components, hard coatings, conductive films, optical coatings, and leading edges and nose cones of aircraft.

As a grain refiner for cemented carbide, it can significantly improve the toughness of the alloy.
