 What is calcium stearate powder?

Calcium stearate is also known as calcium octadecanoate. White light crystalline powder. Chemical formula (C17H35COO)2Ca. Molecular weight 607.00. melting point 179-180℃, decomposed by high heat. Insoluble in water, cold ethanol and ether, soluble in hot benzene, toluene and turpentine, and slightly soluble in hot ethanol and ether. Decompose with strong acid to stearic acid and corresponding calcium salt. Water absorbent in air. Not resistant to lipolytic microorganisms. Decomposes at high temperatures to produce stearone and hydrocarbons. Non-toxic. Industrial products are often mixed with the corresponding oleate.

Calcium stearate is made by reacting roasted stearic acid with sodium hydroxide to make a dilute soap solution and then reacting with calcium chloride.

Calcium stearate is a uniform fine white powder, soluble in toluene, ethanol, benzene and other organic solvents, and insoluble in water. It decomposes slowly when heated to 400℃ and is combustible, and decomposes into stearic acid and corresponding calcium salt when it meets strong acid. Calcium stearate is water-absorbent and non-toxic. Calcium stearate powder is used as a stabilizer and lubricant of PVC; as a halogen absorber in polyethene and polypropylene; as a lubricant of polyolefin fibre and moulded products; as a lubricant and demoulding agent of phenolic, amino and other thermosetting plastics; a thickening agent of grease; a waterproof agent of waterproof fabric; a smoothing agent of paint and lubricant of pencil core, etc. Food grade calcium stearate is used as an anti-caking agent.
