Nickel boride is a compound of nickel and boron with the molecular formula Ni2B. It is one of the borides of nickel. The molecular formula "Ni2B" and the name "nickel boride" are commonly used for Ni2B catalysts obtained by the reaction of nickel salts with sodium borohydride.
Nickel boride catalysts can reduce unsaturated ethers, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, amines, amides, etc. to the corresponding saturated compounds without hydrogenation. Unsaturated nitrile can be reduced to primary amine while the epoxy compound remains unchanged. In addition to sodium borohydride, dimethoxy borane (Meo)2BH4 or lithium borohydride LiBH4 can also be reacted with nickel chloride to obtain nickel borohydride catalysts for the above reactions. It is worth emphasizing that only NiCl2 exhibited catalytic activity in the combined catalytic reduction reaction of 2-methyl quinoline with various transition metal salts such as CoCl2, NiCl2, CuCl2, CrCl3 and sodium borohydride.
