What is lithium stearate?

Lithium stearate is a white powdered compound with the chemical formula LiC18H35O2, white powder or colorless crystals. Density: 1.025 g/cm3. Melting point: 220.0-221.5°C.

Stable at room temperature and pressure. Slightly soluble in water and ethanol, solubility in water is 0.09 g/100ml, and solubility in ethanol is 0.04 g/100ml. Decomposes into stearic acid and corresponding lithium salt when it meets strong acid. Insoluble in ethyl acetate and mineral oil. Forms colloid in mineral oil.

The application of lithium stearate

Lithium stearate can be used as a polythermal stabilizer for transparent products. When used together with phthalic acid plasticizers, the products will not produce white fog and the film will have good transparency. Lithium stearate is more readily incorporated into ketones than other stearates and therefore has less impact on the embossing operation. This product can be used as a non-toxic substitute for barium soap and lead soap.

Lithium stearate can also be used in conjunction with phosphatidic acid plasticizers. This product can also be used as an external lubricant for nylon, phenolic resin, and hard polyester (amount of 0.6 parts). How to make lithium stearate

Method one:

Dissolve 10g of stearic acid in 100mL 95% ethanol, titrate with 0.5mol/L lithium hydroxide ethanol solution (if the lithium hydroxide in ethanol can not be fully soluble, add water to make it fully soluble), phenolphthalein as an indicator, the reaction reaches the equivalent point, the precipitated lithium stearate soap will be filtered and divided. The crude product can be recrystallized in 95% ethanol to obtain the pure product.

Method two:

Dissolve sodium hydroxide in water to form a solution, to which stearic acid is added, and then fully reacted and heated to more than 100 ℃. Dissolve lithium chloride in water, and after it cools to room temperature, add it to the resulting sodium stearate solution for reaction; after the reaction is over, release it and dehydrate it by centrifuge; dry it with air drying equipment, and get the finished product.
