WCl6 is a low boiling point (348 °C), highly active crystalline powder. It is mainly used in petroleum catalysis, high purity tungsten powder refining, ultrafine tungsten powder preparation and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) [ 1 ] and other fields. With the continuous development of the application of tungsten hexachloride, it is of great significance to study its industrial preparation methods. This study used small experimental equipment to prepare tungsten hexachloride powder to provide a reasonable process for industrial production at a certain scale in the future. 2.1 The raw materials for the preparation of tungsten hexachloride are industrial chlorine (>99%) and tungsten powder. The chemical composition of tungsten powder is shown in Table 1.
2.2 Chlorination reaction system The reaction system is self-made by the unit. It is mainly composed of chlorine drying tower, conversion furnace, chlorination reaction furnace, dust collection tower (WCl6 collection tower) and tail gas absorption tank. See Figure 1 for the system diagram.
2.3 Process: Add tungsten to the chlorination reactor, pass a certain amount of purified chlorine gas, use chlorine and tungsten gas, solid phase reaction (W +3Cl2 = WCl6), the chlorination reaction temperature is 600 ~ 900 °C, The reaction produces gaseous tungsten hexachloride, which is condensed to obtain a tungsten hexachloride crystal powder.
